Battle of Midway, McKenzie battle in San Pasqual
Such a great run in a stellar comeback by Midway, and within a month the horse died as result of a workout accident. Named after the great air-sea battle of World War II, Battle of Midway was a Cal bred that ran second in the 2017 Santa Anita Derby and ran third in that year's Kentucky Derby, hanging on gamely after leading much of the way. He cut back to the 1 Mile distance to great effect with a victory in that Fall's Breeder's Cup Mile at Santa Anita. He was quickly sent to stud, where he mostly flopped, before going back into training. The San Pasqual showed him rounding into exceptional form. Remarkably, his sole successfully impregnation of a mare obtained a fold on the very day he died. -R.R.R.
