OZONE PARK NOV 18 -2017 - The Artie Schiller ungraded stakes at 1 Mile on the Turf (Race 8) today stacked up as a two-flight affair. Runners Blacktype and Delta Prince seemed dependably capable of 100 Beyers figures - and the rest seemed a bit less so. Time Form saw Delta Price (9) in front early, trailed by about five lengths by a phalanx of Wolfrock (4), BlackType-FR (5), and Converge (8), and did not expect success from a closer. A misty cold November rain would soften the turf course - races on the previous day had been moved off the turf to save it for this one.

The horses had more or less been running in somewhat interrelated groupings Some groupings of tougher class than than others. There were mid-Atlantics, and Canadians.   Hollywood Hideaway was a Canadian shipper - a talented long shot that was 0 for 3 on the year. Interesting, but risky.

I tended to count BlackType and Delta Prince as best, with Night Prowler (1), Fire away (2), and A Lot (6) the likely second tier. Fire Away looked like a typical Shug McGaughey horse - carefully handled, knocking on the door, but I opted more strongly for Night Prowler, once a heavy hitter, instead. Both are 5 year olds. Fire Away was 0 for 7 this year, although 2 for 2 at Aqueduct during his career. BlackType had run 6 races over the year, and had won two in a row, so there was some fear of trailing off.

My choice was 5, 9 over 1, 2, 6

So, Fire Away by War Front - Salute, by Unbridled in the vaunted black and red colors of Phipps won. It seems as if that 7 races under Mr McG are easier than 3 or 5 with some other trainer.

It looked like this: 2-9-3-

Had to pare down my number one shots because Delta Prince scratched. So saved some bills there. Bumping up Fire Away wouldn’t have helped because I completely missed Monster Bea(9), and, as I said, I'd passed on Hollywood Heavy (3). Monster Bea had last run a good race coming back from a layoff, to miss against, you guessed it, Fire Away.  were asking a lot of A Lot, who has won almost $500,000, but who was coming of just one start in 12 months.

The early going was a bit of a jumble, although Wolf Rock had been expected to be there before fading (and he was and he did).  It certainly was a mostly rail, stalking, good ride by John Velasquez for Fire Away. Blacktype ran with him, got up for a piece (missed place by 3 1/2 L) , but was not too inspired. Maybe he was pressed in the six races he ran - but he certainly is a fine one. Night Prowler made a mild move too, but was shunted by another horse. One might have liked Castellano to watch out for that better, but maybe it wasn’t in Night Prowler's nature to bear down. Jockeys dont matter, until they win one for you!

Hats off to Dan Ellman for picking the Aqueduct feature two weeks in a row. - Racetrack Romeo
